What is GST?

GST stands for Goods and Services Tax. It was introduced in India in 2017 to simplify the old tax system. Before GST, businesses paid multiple taxes like VAT, excise, and service tax, which led to confusion and higher prices.

What is exclusive GST calculation?

Exclusive GST calculation applies when the price of a product or service does not include GST. Here, the GST amount is added on top of the original price. For example, if a product costs ₹1,000 and the GST rate is 18%, the GST amount would be ₹180 (₹1,000 × 18%), making the final price ₹1,180. This method is commonly used in B2B (business-to-business) transactions, wholesale trade, or invoices where taxes are shown separately. Businesses prefer this to clearly display the tax component, making it easier to claim input tax credits.

You can Calculate GST Exclusive by our Easy GST Calculator just choose Exclusive in our calculator.

What is Inclusive GST Calculation?

Inclusive GST calculation is used when the price of a product or service already includes GST. Here, the GST amount is embedded within the total price. For instance, if a product is priced at ₹1,180 (including 18% GST), the original price before GST would be ₹1,000 (₹1,180 ÷ 1.18), and the GST amount is ₹180 (₹1,180 – ₹1,000). This method is typical in retail sales or consumer-facing prices (e.g., restaurant bills, e-commerce platforms) to show the final upfront cost.

Types of GST in India

There are mainly 4 types of GST presents in India.

  1. CCGST (Central GST)
  2. SGST (State GST)
  3. IGST (Integrated GST)
  4. UGST (Union Territory GST)

CGST– is the tax collected by the Central Government on intra-state sales (transactions within the same state). For example, if a Mumbai-based seller supplies goods to a Pune buyer, CGST applies. The revenue goes to the Centre. CGST operates alongside SGST (State GST) under India’s dual GST system, ensuring both central and state governments share taxes on local transactions.

SGST- is levied by the State Government on intra-state sales. For instance, if a Chennai shop sells products within Tamil Nadu, SGST is charged. The revenue stays with the state where the sale occurs. SGST and CGST are applied simultaneously but go to separate governments. This system ensures states retain control over local tax revenues.

IGST- is imposed by the Central Government on inter-state sales (transactions between two states). For example, if a Delhi manufacturer sells goods to Karnataka, IGST applies. The tax collected is later divided between the Centre and the destination state. IGST simplifies interstate trade by avoiding double taxation and ensuring seamless tax credit flow across states.

UGST- replaces SGST in Union Territories (UTs) like Chandigarh, Lakshadweep, or Ladakh. Since UTs lack their own legislatures, the Central Government administers UGST for intra-UT sales. Revenue goes to the UT’s administration. It functions similarly to SGST but is tailored for territories governed directly by the Centre.

How to Calculate GST without a GST Calculator?

How to Calculate GST without a Easy GST Calculator

Calculating GST manually is easy if you know the formulas and GST slab rates. Here’s how to do it for GST-exclusive and GST-inclusive amounts:

Formula To Calculate GST Manually

GST-Exclusive GST = Original Price × (GST Rate / 100)
GST-Inclusive Original Price = Total Price / (1 + GST Rate/100)

For GST-Exclusive Amounts

When the original price does not include GST, use these steps:

  1. Identify the original price

  2. Check the GST rate

  3. Calculate GST amount:
    GST=Original Price×(GST Rate/100)

  4. Add GST to the original price

For GST-Inclusive Amounts

When the price already includes GST, reverse-calculate to find the GST amount:

  1. Note the GST-inclusive price

  2. Check the GST rate

  3. Find the original price (pre-GST):
    Original Price=(GST-Inclusive Price)/1+(GST Rate/100)

  4. Calculate GST amount
