What is an HSN code?
HSN (Harmonised System of Nomenclature) is the international system for classifying goods; India uses it to assign GST rates. Services use SAC (Services Accounting Codes) beginning with 99. Your GST invoices and returns must mention the correct HSN/SAC based on turnover:
| Annual turnover | HSN digits required on invoice |
|---|---|
| Up to ₹5 crore | 4 digits (B2B mandatory) |
| Above ₹5 crore | 6 digits |
| Imports / exports | 8 digits |
This finder covers the most commonly searched codes for shops, freelancers and small businesses. For a legally definitive classification, verify on the official GST portal or with the Customs Tariff, since rates change through Council notifications.
